1. Location, location, location! So much can be said about this topic, but I think the most important thing here is know where you do and do not want to live. More so the areas that you would not want to live, and stay firm to this throughout looking for a house. C and I found at least two houses that we liked a lot, but the location was somewhere we had told our real estate agent that we did not like. We never should have gone to those houses! Because what it boils down to is you can love the house, but if you hate where you live. . .is the home really that great? We didn't think so.
2. Speaking of Real Estate Agents, find one that you trust! Ours has been very helpful during the closing process, but that was about it. We found both homes that we put offers in on... Be clear with what you want, and don't be afraid to gently put your agent back on the right track. It's not worth wasting your time and their's if you all aren't on the same page.
3. Be sure you and your partner are on the same page! C and I really took the time to sit down together and make a list of what we really would like and couldn't live without. With this being our first home, we tried to stay realistic with our wants and needs, and I think we did a pretty good job of that. We also tried to stay flexible within this list so that a truly great home wouldn't be cast aside because it didn't meet the list!
Once we found a home to put an offer in on, we were amazed at how fast the process goes! However, the first home turned out not the be the home for us (i.e. we got outbid) but that was OK because with the market the way that it is it wasn't long before we found our home! It goes to show you that sometimes things work out for a reason that that God's timing really is perfect because we couldn't imagine living in the first house now that we have ours!
We're closing (fingers crossed) September 14th and if all goes as planned I'll have pictures up just as soon as it's ours!
